A one-day symbolic hunger-strike protest demanding powers
for Gram Sabhas to decide on setting up of TASMAC liquor shop in their panchayat

In the case that was heard by the bench lead by the Chief Justice of Chennai High Court on 21.01.2020, the Court has ordered the Government to express their stand on granting the power to Panchayats and Gram Sabhas to decide on setting-up of TASMAC shops. Also, in the states of Haryana and Maharashtra, law amendments have been made granting power to the Gram Sabhas to decide on matters regarding liquor shops. We have arranged for a hunger strike protest tomorrow seeking a similar law amendment in Tamil Nadu.
The Thannatchi organization that strives to empower local bodies, especially the Panchayats, has convened this hunger strike protest and people from various parts of Tamil Nadu, including social activists, representatives from Gandhian organizations, anti-liquor activists, ladies welfare groups, people working for betterment of villages and many more will be taking part in the protest. Many social organizations such as Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam, Satta Panchayat Iyakkam are also taking part in the protest.
We request you to extend support by sending your representatives to cover the event empowering Gram Sabhas. Thank You!
